The winners of the 2016 Cupe 1289 Scholarship, all well deserved winners and shining stars in their grade levels:

Gordon Hatcher Level 1 ($300) Son of Krystal Mulley-Hatcher (Revenue Accounting Department) Gordon is currently in Grade 11 at Waterford Valley High in St. John's. He is planning on furthering his education to have a career in the medical field.

Keisha Roche Level 2 ($500) Daughter of Wayne Roche (Assessment Department). Keisha is currently a Grade 12 student in Holy Trinity High School in Torbay. She is planning on attending MUN and pursuing a career in Medicine.

Sarah Blackwood Level 2 ($500) Daughter of Beverly Blackwood (Revenue Accounting Department) Sarah is currently a Grade 12 student at O'Donel High in Mount Pearl. She is planning on attending MUN with aspirations of becoming a nurse.

Bryan Snow Level 3 ($800) Son of Bruce Snow (Planning, Development and Engineering Department) Bryan graduated from Waterford Valley High and is currently in his first year at MUN. His goal is to be accepted into the School of Pharmacy

Joshua Burt Level 3 ($800) Son of Kim Marshall (Recreation Department) Graduated from Gonzaga High School. He is currently attending his first year of MUN and he is planning on having a career as a Chemical Engineer.

On December 6, we mark the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, where 14 women were singled out and murdered because of their gender.

Annual Food Drive

It’s that time of year again. From Monday, Nov. 14 to Friday, Nov. 18 the City is holding a food drive to collect non-perishable food items in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.

To participate, you are asked to package non-perishable food items and place them outside your home in locations highly visible from the road, away from your garbage, by 8 a.m. on your garbage day. City staff will collect the donations beginning at 8 a.m.

If you live in an apartment building, you should ask your building manager to organize a collection area and to contact 311 (754-CITY) to arrange a pickup.

Food items can also be dropped off during the week at City Hall, the H.G.R. Mews, Southlands or Kilbride Lions Community Centres.

The City and Councillors will post daily tallies on social media using #nlfooddrive.

The Community Food Sharing Association stocks food banks throughout the province; commonly needed items include:

• Canned Soup & Stew
• Peanut Butter
• Canned Beans
• Macaroni & Cheese
• Dried Pasta, Noodles & Rice
• Pasta Sauce
• Canned Meat & Fish
• Beans & Legumes
• Canned Vegetables & Fruit
• Canned/Powdered Milk
• Breakfast Cereal
• Baking Supplies

Food drives in the past have been a great success. Spread the word to your neighbours, friends and family and help us have another successful food drive!
